Square Kilometre Array (SKA)  Impact Assessment

Quotec led a team to study the economic impact of the proposal to site the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope in South Africa, on behalf of the National Research Foundation of South Africa. 

There were three key areas of study – the economic impact of the construction and operational phases (largely a local/regional impact study); the knowledge economy impacts on South Africa of the wider training and technological investment (largely the science centre and related graduate and postgraduate training) and the wider impact on South Africa’s standing in the world economy and the impact on people movements.  In order to elucidate the wider impacts we studied the impact and expected impact of several key science centres, including Diamond, LHC, CERN, LOFAR in Europe and other telescopes around the world.  As part of this study we amassed a database of science impact literature (several hundred publications), which give us a deep pool of knowledge relating to science impact mechanisms and processes for improving science impact.

Human Factors Integration Defence Technology Centre Exploitation of Programme Outputs

The Human Factors Integration, Defence Technology Centre (HFI DTC) is one of four DTC’s funded by MOD. A DTC is a formal collaborative arrangement between industry and academic experts in a particular technology, funded jointly by participants and the MOD.

The participants work together to generate and enhance an area of technology considered vital to the delivery of future UK Defence capabilities.  The HFI DTC commissioned Quotec to assess the viability of exploiting their current research outputs and develop a framework for assessing the exploitation viability of future research outputs.

Technology Roadmapping for a FTSE 100 Company

Quotec was engaged by a FTSE 100 consumer goods company to produce a technology roadmap for one of its leading brands. This roadmap identified likely future market needs (potential future products which could meet these needs and the technologies required to create these products).

Quotec undertook desk-based research and facilitated a workshop with key R&D managers to collate the required information before producing the final roadmap. The roadmap detailed three possible technology routes to support the client’s brand from 2007 to 2016 and was used to identify gaps in the client’s current R&D portfolio in order to provide direction for future R&D activities.
